I didn’t get the idea for the Rocket from here, but it’s probably in there somewhere. There used to be a local channel near where I live that showed old movie serials including this one.
Is it cheesy? Uh… Maybe a little.

That was … cute.
Also funny in a very unintentional way… I found myself laughing at it more than anything else.
That was pretty freakin’ cool! For 50’s effects, it was pretty realistic.
OMG! Jim, the whole time I watched it, I could only think of Joe Vander Sloot (sorry, I kept calling him Klein) and his Michigan Mobsters going at it.
I’m actually gonna YouTube some of the others.
Personally, I’m highly amused by the titles of some of the serials:
King of the Rocketmen
Radar Men from Mars
The second is quite possibly the best name ever.
chessey but fresh
Ah! one of the old Commando Cody serials. I think he only got that name on his third storyline though.
When I first watched Captain Cody in the ’70s, it was cool. Now, 40 years later, it’s cheesy p, dated and cool.
Did I see Lenard Nimoy listed there?
And is he the basis for the Rocketeer? The costumes are very close.
Yep. Leonard Nimoy is in there. You can even hear his voice for a moment.
As for Rocketman being the inspiration for the Rocketeer… I don’t know, but it seems possible. It’s got the right elements—a jet pack, a helmet, and the skies above L.A.
