Engine: Part 5

The dog observed the hand and sniffed it, but didn’t lick it. Tiger was smart enough to know he didn’t want to taste the metal-and-ceramic gauntlet.

Within a few moments, everyone had arrived: the old Heroes’ League, the new, Prentkos, and both Jody’s and Colette’s unconscious bodies. Talk about not being able to save everyone. Being turned into Rook’s mind-controlled cyborg was still in this Jody’s future. Though I didn’t need to, I made a check, changing that future had the same problems as saving Travis. I checked on Colette, too, but hers wasn’t any different.

I could do it, but it wouldn’t be worth the price. Continue reading Engine: Part 5

Engine: Part 1

As the stone touched my gauntlet, I connected with it and through it the Galaxy Core Device (GCD) itself. How did it feel to use a device that could destroy galaxies and create new ones?

You’d think it would be a moment of enlightenment or maybe ascension, since you assumed powers that you’d normally think were reserved for gods.

What surprised me is how normal it felt. I’d been absorbing knowledge from my implant on demand for years now. I’d been training with Kee to understand what Artificers could do for years and while I’d only been interfacing with Abominator and Artificer technology with those skills for a few days, it felt natural. Singularity: Part 15

Red Lightning grinned, “I’ll be ready. We can’t lose. We’ve got two of you.”

Grandpa laughed. “Glad you think so. I’m feeling behind the times, myself.”

It felt good to see a whisper of the friendship I knew they had. They might have had a conversation, but that’s when the Cabal soldiers all jumped in our direction—not directly at us but close enough that they’d figure it out soon enough.

And that meant that the time to start was before they figured it out. Grandpa had come to the same conclusion. Continue reading Singularity: Part 15

Singularity: Part 11

I didn’t know when the team had realized that Red Lightning had turned supervillain, but if Grandma was pregnant with Uncle Steve, this was too early.

My best bet was to stop thinking about it at all because Daniel’s grandfather might hear. The second best was to hope that if he did figure it out, he’d know not to break it too soon.

All of that would be wasted though, if either Ray or Red Lightning blew the secret. Continue reading Singularity: Part 11

Sudden Changes: Part 13

As it turned out, I was right to worry because the situation evolved before my eyes—assuming that watching through a window in my HUD counts.

The True stood in front of Daniel’s house on the sidewalk and pointed their their rifles toward it—which was a good tactic. No one inside could prevent them from shooting up the house.

Except then, they didn’t. Continue reading Sudden Changes: Part 13

In the Public Eye: Part 15

Another update. It’s sort of on time if by on time you mean it was completed on the day it was supposed to appear. Sort of.

Well anyway, you’ll get a chance to run into one of the two surviving members of the original Heroes League in this post. That’s something to look forward to even if the specific circumstances of the meeting are a little depressing.

One of these days, I’d like to write story that’s completely the original League set in the 50’s or 60’s or something. Not sure when I’ll do it, but it would be cool.

Gathering: Part 2

Some of you might have noticed that I changed the last installment’s title and made it the beginning of a new section of the story. I’ve even gotten a little way into writing a cast page. I haven’t made it public yet, however.

There are more characters than I’d have thought and I’m introducing a few more in the course of the next couple posts.

So, anyway… Another chunk of story. Continue reading Gathering: Part 2
